The ANZTR focusses on monitoring trauma care, from the time of incident to discharge from definitive care, in order to reflect and act upon emerging trends and demands on the trauma system across Australia and New Zealand. Collecting and analysing information about trauma patients, their management and their injury outcomes informs future improvements to health service provision and development, with the long term societal aim of reducing preventable deaths and permanent disability as a result of injuries.
The ANZTR collects 90 data-points in accordance with the Bi-national Trauma Minimum Dataset for Australia and New Zealand, for severely injured patients (ISS > 12) or death after injury. The major trauma centres submit data to the ANZTR directly or through state-based registries. Patients are included if they subsequently die after injury, or if they sustain major trauma (defined as an Injury Severity Score greater than 12). The ANZTR now has six years of quality Australian data from 1 July 2015 to 30 June 2021, and four years of New Zealand data from 1 July 2017 to 30 June 2021, and continues to recruit sites for the purpose of capturing population-based data for the severely injured.
Data extracts are provided by health services and/or state based registries and are not collected at source by the registry.
The ANZTR aims to improve the quality of trauma care and support trauma quality improvement in Australia and New Zealand.
