Tasmania routinely receives notifications of Non Melanoma Skin Cancers (NMSCs) in the population from reporting pathology notifiers. Demographic data and a minimum set of clinical data items are available for use in ethically-approved research projects.
The Tasmanian Cancer Registry has a complete register of histologically-confirmed NMSCs covering the period 1978 to 2018.
The TCR is the only registry in Australia that registers non-melanoma skin cancers (NMSC) periodically as funds allow. Up to 2005, the NMSC dataset includes all histologically confirmed lesions, the morphological type and subtype, and the body sub-site. From 2006 to 2018, only one lesion of each histological type (i.e., basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma) is registered per year of diagnosis, and data on the morphological and topographic subtypes are not available.
This dataset enables wide-ranging research specific to the epidemiology of NMSCs to help inform cancer control strategies.
Tasmanian state data
The Tasmanian Cancer Registry (TCR) was established in 1977, with cancer declared a notifiable disease in December 1992. Cancer registration since this time has had a legislative basis.
