Under the Births, Deaths and Marriages Registration Act 1995, all babies born in NSW must be registered within 60 days of birth. Parents must provide the Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages with the full details of the child’s birth for a Birth Certificate to be produced. The NSW Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages (RBDM) keeps a permanent record of all registered births.
The Register includes all children born and subsequently registered in New South Wales. Deaths in utero that occur after 20 weeks gestation or at greater than 400 grams are recorded in the RBDM Births Register. Although still births are registered as a birth, for reporting purposes these are accounted for in the perinatal death statistics. Where there is sign of life at birth, but the neonate subsequently dies, the birth is recorded in the Births Register and the death is recorded in the Deaths Register.
