The Register includes all deaths that occur in Tasmania. Data is obtained from Death Registration forms usually provided by funeral directors and completed by the spouse, partner or relative of the deceased. An attending doctor also supplies a Medical Certificate of Cause of Death and in some cases such as car accidents, suspicious deaths or deaths at home, the Coroner provides the information to Births, Deaths and Marraiges instead of a doctor.
The registry includes any person who died in Tasmania; stillbirths and fetal deaths are not recorded in the Deaths Register. Where there is sign of life at birth, but the neonate subsequently dies, the birth is recorded in the Births Register and the death is recorded in the Deaths Register.
