The ACT Perinatal Data Collection (formerly known as the Midwives Data Collection) is a population-based surveillance system covering all births in ACT public and private hospitals, as well as homebirths. ACT Health receives notifications from patient administrative and clinical records, with the information usually collected by midwives or other birth attendants.
The ACT Maternal Perinatal Data Collection covers all births in ACT hospitals (public and private) and home births in the ACT. It does not include interstate births where the mother is usually an ACT resident. Currently, data from Canberra Hospital and Calvary Hospital (Public) is included in the Master Linkage Key. The ACT Perinatal Data Collection (PDC) encompasses all live births, and stillbirths of at least 20 weeks gestation or at least 400 grams birth weight. The ACT PDC includes notifications of births which occur in ACT; it does not receive notifications of interstate births where the mother is resident in ACT.
The data collection has operated since 1991 but only data from 1997 is considered of sufficient quality for analysis. The ACT PDC has undergone multiple minor revisions over the years, major changes occurred in 2002 and 2008.
To monitor patterns of obstetric and neonatal practice in the State and to provide statistical information on specific topics within these fields to assist with the planning of Department of Health services. It is also intended to be a source of information for research in obstetric and neonatal care and to be used in the education of students of midwifery and medicine.
