Description 
Data in the SA Perinatal Statistics Collection are collected and managed by the Epidemiology Branch, Wellbeing SA. Data are collected under the Health Care Act 2008 (SA) which requires the notification of all births occurring in South Australia to the Minister for Health and Wellbeing. SA Perinatal Statistics Collection data include information about pregnancy care, services and outcomes. This includes demographic, medical and obstetric information about the mother; and information on the labour, delivery and condition of the infant.
Scope
The scope of the SA Perinatal Statistics Collection is all births in SA public and private hospitals, and home births. This includes births to women who normally reside interstate. Births of South Australian residents which occur in other states are not included. It encompasses all live births, stillbirths and terminations of pregnancy of at least 20 weeks gestation or at least 400 grams birth weight.

Purpose 
A mandated, population health registry to monitor patterns of obstetric and neonatal practice and outcomes in South Australia, and to provide statistical information on specific topics to improve the health outcomes of mothers and babies in South Australia, and to assist with the planning of services. Data are also submitted nationally to the National Perinatal Data Collection.
